Preparedness This Week

Preparedness This Week

What got done this last week? Not much of anything if I think about this too hard, but some things got accomplished. I also apologize for the lack of pictures. I need to take more!

1. I expanded my food storage. I added to my food stores and decluttered some shelves in the basement to accommodate it. My goal over the winter is to finish cleaning out my basement and get new shelving up. I am opting for wooden shelves and I have noticed that the price of plywood is going through the roof! So I will be saving up for this.

2. I canned some more pear butter. This does not seem like a lot, but these kind of foods are nutritious and very mood-lifting in the winter! I also added some more quart and half-pint jars to have on hand. I also bought a canning kit with a jar lifter, lid lifter, and a funnel in the kit. I had been improvising before so these will be great!

3. I started reading How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times by James Wesley Rawles. I am already learning a lot! He also writes a great blog, SurvivalBlog.com, that goes on to illustrate more on the preparedness lifestyle as well as the survival lifestyle.

4. I bought some camping supplies to add to our emergency stores: waterproof matches, sterno cans, a pocket knife, emergency space blanket, two 1# propane cylinders for the camping stove, and water purification tablets. I spent about $20.00 for all this and I have a little more piece of mind for my family.

That is about it for preparedness this last week. We had a busy week with the school homecoming so I did not get as much done as I would like! But a little is better than none!

This week’s goals include:

1. Make granola
2. Make bread
3. Get back to dehydrating onions and peppers
4. Can squash and squash pickles
5. Can the small potatoes
6. Research portable propane and kerosene heaters for indoor use
7. Research generators for power outages

Thanks for reading and have a great night!

PS This has been added to the Preparedness Challenge on the Homestead Revival!

  1. I like your list.

We went next door to see about picking pears; but due to the drought…they were super small and hard as my head!
There was NO blush on the pears at all.

I've been watching from the kitchen window…if I see even the slightest hint of red on those pears…I'm going next door to get some.
I'd love me some pear butter!

  2. I've been waiting to read that book you mentioned from our local library. It's so popular that I've been on the wait list for over 6 months or more! But my turn is coming up very soon! Hope it's worth the wait!

    Thanks for linking up!
